PV mounting systems for façades and walls

Developed and manufactured by ALTEC

Photovoltaic façade mounting systems are specialised mounting solutions that enable solar panels to be installed directly onto the external walls of a building. They allow façade surfaces to be used for electricity generation via photovoltaics, thereby combining energy-related and architectural functions. Larger façade areas in particular are ideal for PV façade installation and therefore offer great potential for sustainable energy generation.

Everything you need to know about

photovoltaic façade mounting systems:

What are the advantages of a PV façade mounting system?

Photovoltaic façade mounting systems offer many advantages. Firstly, building façades usually provide large, previously unused areas which, when fitted with a PV façade system, can be used efficiently to generate electricity and energy from solar power. This allows a building’s full potential to be realised, which is particularly advantageous in urban areas where roof space is limited.

Modern PV façade installations can also allow solar panels to be integrated into the building’s design, thereby serving as a design feature. This gives the building a contemporary and innovative appearance, effectively combining function and aesthetics.

Photovoltaic façade mounting systems can offer a significant advantage, particularly in winter, as their vertical orientation allows them to capture the lower angle of sunlight; this can lead to higher yields, especially when combined with a PV mounting system for flat roofs or pitched roofs. Furthermore, due to their vertical orientation, photovoltaic façade mounting systems are less affected by snow loads.

Overall, PV façade mounting systems offer a smart combination of energy efficiency, architectural design and seasonal performance optimisation.

Is installing solar panels on a building façade a good idea?

Under certain circumstances, a photovoltaic façade mounting system can be a very sensible addition to or alternative for traditional roof-mounted systems, particularly if the existing roof area is not suitable for efficient photovoltaic use. The roof area may be too small to meet the desired electricity demand, or it may have an unfavourable orientation (for example, facing north) or pitch. Facade surfaces, particularly those facing east, south or west, can then be used to compensate for this.

How is a PV façade mounting system constructed?

A PV façade mounting system differs significantly from traditional roof-mounted systems in terms of its structure and orientation. The solar panels are usually installed vertically on a building’s façade, depending on the building’s structure and the desired orientation towards the sun. The PV façade mounting system consists of several key components:

The PV façade substructure is fixed directly to the building wall, thereby forming the supporting framework for the solar modules. The cabling is often integrated into the substructure to ensure it is protected from the elements and remains visually unobtrusive.

Another component of PV façade installation is the module mounting system. This consists of an insert system that is attached to the PV façade substructure

The PV façade substructure is attached directly to the building’s external wall. An air gap is also incorporated between the external wall and the modules to prevent the modules from overheating, as high temperatures reduce their performance. At the same time, the so-called rear ventilation in a photovoltaic façade mounting system helps to wick away moisture, thereby protecting both the modules and the façade from structural damage.
